Question 1

How do I start fish farming with limited budget?

Accepted Answer

Start small with a backyard pond or tank system. Focus on hardy species like Tilapia or Koi that require less investment. Government subsidies can cover up to 50% of initial costs. Begin with 500-1000 fingerlings and gradually expand as you gain experience.

Question 2

What is the best fish species for beginners?

Accepted Answer

Tilapia is ideal for beginners due to its hardiness, fast growth, and tolerance to varying water conditions. Rui and Katla are also good choices for traditional pond culture. These species have established markets and reliable demand.

Question 3

How much profit can I expect from fish farming?

Accepted Answer

Profit varies based on species, pond size, and management. On average, well-managed ponds yield 20-40% profit margin. A 1-acre pond can generate ৳2-4 lakh annual profit with proper care. Commercial operations with multiple ponds can be significantly more profitable.

Question 4

How often should I feed my fish?

Accepted Answer

Feed 2-3 times daily for optimal growth. Young fish require more frequent feeding (3-4 times), while mature fish can be fed twice daily. Total daily feed should be 2-5% of total fish biomass, adjusted based on water temperature and fish activity.

Question 5

What are the signs of sick fish?

Accepted Answer

Watch for: unusual swimming patterns, loss of appetite, color changes, spots or lesions, gasping at surface, bloating, or isolation from school. Early detection is crucial - remove sick fish immediately and test water quality.

Question 6

How do I maintain water quality?

Accepted Answer

Test pH, ammonia, and dissolved oxygen regularly. Maintain pH between 6.5-8.5, and DO above 5 mg/L. Change 10-20% water weekly, avoid overfeeding, and use aeration during hot weather. Lime application helps maintain alkalinity.

Question 7

Can I farm fish without a pond?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Biofloc systems, cage culture in rivers/canals, and tank-based recirculating systems are alternatives. These require less land but higher technical knowledge. Biofloc is gaining popularity for intensive Tilapia production.

Question 8

How do I get government subsidies for fish farming?

Accepted Answer

Contact your local Upazila Fisheries Office. Register as a fish farmer, submit required documents (land papers, NID, bank account). Subsidies cover feed, equipment, and pond construction. Training programs are also available free of cost.

Question 9

What is the ideal pond size for commercial farming?

Accepted Answer

For commercial operations, 0.5-2 acres is ideal for manageable harvesting and feeding. Depth should be 4-6 feet. Smaller ponds (0.1-0.3 acre) work for beginners or intensive systems. Shape should allow easy netting.

Question 10

How long does it take to harvest fish?

Accepted Answer

Growth period varies by species: Tilapia 4-6 months, Rui/Katla 8-12 months, Pangas 6-8 months, Shrimp 3-4 months. Market size depends on local demand - typically 500g-1kg for table fish.
